Background
I am Mathiew Saba, a journalist by the grace of God. I was born and raised in Uganda and come from a humble family, a polygamous common practice throughout Africa.
I grew up in different relatives’ homes because of the early breakdown of my mother and father while a juvenile. At the home of my widowed grandmother, where I lived as a child, there were over 15 children from different relatives. Glory to God. We all grew up. Isn’t God awesome in protection and provision?
Growing up, life was full of harrowing experiences characterized by poverty and diseases. Despite being a tiny boy, I was not spared in heavy work like collecting firewood, water, and digging. There were many questions which I never had answers for them. Amidst such difficulties, God preserved me. He knew me.
One day when I returned from the garden, I found my mother’s home. I was so happy to see Mum again. I had lost hope of meeting her again. I thought her presence would solve all my problems, but nothing changed.
She took me to where she was renting a room, and misery continued because we were in the urban center where you couldn’t even get wild fruit; unlike in the village in a metropolitan slum area, we survived on water and only in the evening. I regretted leaving the village to town, but God had plans for my life.
Education
I spent two years without going to school when I came to my mum’s place; after such a period, I went to school; things were new to me because I was from the village. From a humble family, God preserved me through a rough childhood. Because my mum found it hard to raise money for my school fees, I used to collect banana peelings, sell them to those with cattle, and introduce some cash. It was challenging to look for them and make good money. By then, a basin full of banana peelings cost 200ugx. (about 6 cents in the US).
Becoming a journalist
Becoming a journalist was my childhood dream; I loved writing and reading, and whenever I heard people reading and writing news peppers, I admired them. Nevertheless, to God be the glory for this course because I have led so many people to Christ through good communication skills and presentation as a Christian journalist. I have also been able to meet and encourage many young Christians over the years, encouraging them to walk mindfully on their Christian journey.
Working with Jesus Fed Me (JFM)
The opportunity to serve God’s people with JFM has been an incredible blessing since 2019 when I started as a volunteer. In JFM, I serve as a manager in Uganda. Some of my responsibilities include administering the gospel to people, acting as a guardian to students sponsored by JFM, being an ever-present servant in case I need to be sent anywhere, and being a point of contact in Uganda.
Many families have seen the hand of God through JFM, education, and welfare. Such families wouldn’t have access to food, safe shelter, education, and medical care if not for the intervention of JFM. I have witnessed how love and care bring meaning to the lives of less privileged families. They are being transformed and are being given hope and light.
Thank you, caring donors in the USA, for accepting the opportunity to serve the Lord through JFM. We pray that you are significantly blessed by our generous God.
