Polygamy is illegal among Christians though other religions in Africa and Uganda still practice it. Today Shaban shared with JFM how they have managed to stay together with his wife Joeria for this long time despite the tough times.
“Many men of my age have married more than one wife, but for me, I am a Christian who obeys and honors my God,” said Shaban. “We have been through ups and downs, but God has been so faithful to us, even in times of trouble, He sends us helpers like you (JFM),” he added.
Men who have married only one wife have gained honor and respect in the societies in which they dwell. The couple from the Namulanda slum have been together for 55 years in marriage, sharing love. However, they have advanced in age, and being childless has exposed them to poor living with no one committing to help them in their old age.
JFM does not have a “regular crowd” of people receiving food gifts; however, we see this couple every couple of weeks as they have no income or source of food relief. They are very thankful to JFM, which provides them with food and domestic needs. Today we found them entirely out of food, but thanks to the Holy Spirit, which leads us every day, we knew it was urgent to go and see them and deliver food. They were happy like always to see us.
I remember the first time we found these two, they didn’t quite know what to expect from us. Is there a catch? Do I know you? Is this real? Now they receive us with open arms as they realize that we are there for one reason only, and that is to bless them.
