The Rwekunye community carries many untold stories of pain, survival, and silent suffering. Hidden deep in this remote village are families battling hardships that many people may never fully understand. During this mission, JFM took the time not only to visit the community but also to deeply study the lives of the people. We wanted to understand how they survive each day, how they think, how they see life, and what keeps them moving despite overwhelming challenges.
Before anything else, we landed on this one particular family of seven children. This family quickly became the representation of hundreds of other struggling families scattered throughout the Rwekunye community. Their story carried the same wounds, tears, and hopelessness that affected many homes in this forgotten place.
Life had already been difficult for this family long before tragedy struck. Poverty had surrounded them for years, but everything became far worse when their father passed away. The little stability they once had disappeared completely. The burden of survival suddenly became too heavy for the family to carry alone.
As if the death of their father was not painful enough, another heartbreaking tragedy followed. Their mother slowly lost her mental stability and eventually became mentally unstable. Since then, life has never been the same again. Some days she disappears from home for long periods. Other days, she returns confused, weak, and unable to care for her own children.
Many families struggle even while both parents are still alive and present. But for this particular family, life became a completely different story. The children were left alone to fight battles far beyond their age and understanding. Childhood was replaced with survival.
The eldest child, Mori, now carries responsibilities no young person should ever have to carry. Instead of focusing on dreams, school, or exploring childhood like other children, Mori wakes up every morning thinking about how his younger brothers and sisters will survive another day.
Their mornings begin with uncertainty. They wake up only by the grace of God, expecting nothing good to come their way. Hunger has become part of their normal life. Fear has become familiar. Yet somehow, they continue moving forward one painful day at a time.
When JFM visited this family, God had something special in mind. Deep in places many people would never risk reaching, hope was quietly waiting to be discovered. This is not written to brag about our work, but the reality is that many people avoid these deep remote areas because of the difficulty and risks involved.
But thanks be to God that JFM goes where others do not want to go. We believe forgotten people matter to God. We believe hidden suffering deserves compassion. And we believe no child should feel abandoned by the world.
When we entered this family’s small home, the pain was impossible to ignore. The condition of the house revealed years of hardship. Torn belongings, empty utensils, weak bodies, and hopeless eyes silently spoke louder than words ever could. As we sat with the children, listening carefully to their story, our hearts filled with emotion. We wanted to understand how they survive each day without parents to guide, protect, or provide for them.
Speaking softly, Mori explained that most days they survive only on water. Not clean drinking water, but pond water collected from unsafe places around the village. Some days there is completely no food in the house. The younger children sleep hungry, waiting for another morning that they are not sure will become any better. The reality of their situation is heartbreaking. While other children spend their days learning, laughing, and dreaming about the future, these children spend their time mourning. They have been forced to suffer too quickly. One painful question remained in our hearts throughout the visit: who will mentor these children? Who will guide them? Who will protect their future? Without intervention, many vulnerable children like these can easily lose hope completely.
The mother’s condition continues to affect the entire family deeply. Some days she runs away from home without warning. Other times, she returns after many days, looking confused and exhausted. The emotional pain carried by these children cannot easily be described. It is only by God’s mercy that they continue standing.
This family is not alone in their suffering. In truth, they represent hundreds of struggling families throughout the Rwekunye community. Poverty, abandonment, sickness, and hopelessness continue to destroy many homes silently every single day.
JFM prayed with the children, shared food, and encouraged them with the Word of God. Something beautiful happened. For a moment, light entered a place that had been covered by darkness for so long. Smiles slowly returned to faces that had almost forgotten how to smile.
The Gospel was also shared with them because beyond physical hunger, these children desperately need spiritual hope. They needed to hear that God still sees them, loves them, and has not forgotten their lives despite all the suffering around them.
Dear donors and partners, without your kindness and sacrifice, families like this would struggle to see the love of God in any visible way. Your giving allows hope to reach forgotten homes. Your compassion allows abandoned children to feel remembered again.
Because of your support, JFM continues reaching places where many people never go. Because of your prayers and generosity, vulnerable children are receiving food, encouragement, and the message of Jesus Christ. One family at a time, lives are being touched, restored, and reminded that they are not alone.
