In many villages across Uganda, there are elderly women like Mama Grace. Once solid and well-known throughout her village, Mama Grace’s strength faded with age. Her steps slowed, and her hands, once steady, started to tremble. She often prayed, echoing the words of Scripture: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth” (Psalm 71:9, KJV).
While the villagers still loved and respected Mama Grace, she felt increasingly overlooked as her strength waned. The younger generation, busy with their lives, often overlooked the elderly among them, seeing them as less relevant in a rapidly changing world.
At JesusFedMe (JFM), we recognize the immense value of every life, especially those like Mama Grace, who have given so much. We understand that the elderly are treasures, full of wisdom and faith, deserving of love and honor.
When JFM visits, we share a message of respect and love for the elderly, often opening the Bible to Psalm 71. We speak of GOD’s faithfulness through all stages of life and remind the villagers that the LORD never forgets His people, even in old age.
“GOD values each of us,” we say. “Just as He does not abandon us in our old age, we must honor and cherish those who have walked this journey of faith before us. We are here today not just to feed the hungry but to remind you of the great worth of our elders, like Mama Grace, who have paved the way for us.”
JFM continues to visit the villages, making a special effort to connect with the elderly, bringing them comfort, prayers, and the love of Christ. In a world that often values youth and strength, we must remind everyone that every stage of life is precious in GOD’s sight.
In honoring Mama Grace, we honor GOD, making the words of Psalm 71 a living reality among us: “O God, from my youth, you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come” (Psalm 71:17-18, ESV).
