God speaks clearly about the kind of fasting that truly pleases Him. It is not only abstaining from food, but a fast that opens the heart to compassion and the hands to action. The prophet Isaiah declares, “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness… to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free” (Isaiah 58:6, KJV). God’s fast breaks chains by responding to human suffering, especially the suffering of the poor, the orphan, and the forgotten.
Scripture continues by showing that true fasting is deeply connected to sharing. “Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house?” (Isaiah 58:7). When we give food to the hungry and care for orphans, we are not just doing charity—we are obeying God. This is the fast He commanded: seeing a need and working upon it with love, kindness, and urgency.
For many vulnerable children, especially orphans, life has taught them a hard language. Hunger speaks louder than words, and poverty shouts over sermons. These children understand the language of food and clothes because their daily struggle is survival. When they receive a meal, they feel seen; when they are clothed, they feel valued. As it is written, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food… notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” (James 2:15–16).
When we give snacks to these children, they listen. When we give them food, we speak a language they love and understand. Jesus Himself fed the hungry before teaching them, because He had compassion. “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have nothing to eat” (Mark 8:2). Through food, hearts are opened, trust is built, and the message of love finds fertile ground.
God has a special concern for orphans, and He calls His people to reflect His heart. “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction” (James 1:27). When we feed orphans, we are practicing pure religion. We are fasting in a way that pleases God—turning sacrifice into service and devotion into action.
Today, because of love in action, orphans received what to eat. We give thanks to God and extend heartfelt gratitude to the donors who made this possible. Your giving is a living sermon. “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again” (Proverbs 19:17). Through your generosity, God’s chosen fast is being fulfilled, and His love is being spoken in the language of food, care, and hope.
