As the busy bus rolled through the dusty roads of northern Uganda, a mother traveling from South Sudan to Kampala had no idea she had left behind the most precious part of her journey—her daughter Mary. When the vehicle made a brief stop in Kiryandongo, a crowded and noisy area, Mary, just eight years old, had stepped off quietly. In the confusion of travelers boarding and disembarking, her mother reentered the bus, unaware that little Mary was not with her. The bus drove off, leaving the child alone, frightened, and surrounded by strangers.
Mary stood quietly by the roadside, the hot sun beating down on her, unsure of where to go or who to turn to. Tears welled up in her eyes as she waited, clinging to the hope that her mother might return. She had nothing—no money, no food, and no idea what to do next. As time passed, hunger crept in and her little body grew weaker, more fragile with every hour. It was in that moment of deep need that the JesusFedMe delivery team came by and noticed Mary sitting there all alone.
I approached Mary gently, spoke with her, and discovered her situation. Though WE couldn’t trace her mother right away, WE did what we could— gave her a hot meal and a place to sit safely among kind and caring people. The food comforted her little body, but more importantly, she was not alone anymore. JesusFedMe stayed with her, prayed for her, and reminded her that even in such a frightening moment, Jesus had not forgotten her. We couldn’t fix everything immediately, but we could give her the love of Christ and the nourishment she so badly needed.
