Loving the poor
Our journey to Northern Uganda was long and challenging but worth every moment. As we traveled through the vast, dry lands, we saw how different this region was from other parts of the country. The landscape was hilly, stretching far and wide, with little vegetation due to the harsh climate. Birds flew freely in the open skies, while wild animals roamed without fear. It was a land that seemed untouched by modernity, where nature and tradition coexisted in a unique and fascinating way.
The people of Northern Uganda live in closely-knit communities, holding onto their traditional beliefs and ways of life. Many have never heard the gospel, and their daily struggles revolve around survival in this dry land. Despite the harsh conditions, their hospitality and curiosity were evident as they gathered to hear our message. The elders sat in circles, listening intently, while the children ran around excitedly, eager to see what we had brought. Their way of life is deeply rooted in customs that have been passed down for generations, making it a challenge to introduce new ideas.
Our mission was to share physical and spiritual food with these wonderful people. We distributed food to families who barely had enough to eat, watching their faces light up with gratitude. As we preached the gospel, we saw the power of God at work—some listened with open hearts, while others remained skeptical. The presence of Jesus was felt as we prayed with them, breaking the spiritual barriers that had kept them in darkness for so long. Slowly, some began to understand that the gospel was not just a foreign idea but the truth that could transform their lives.
The journey was long, and the work was not easy, but the joy of seeing lives changed made it all worthwhile. Many came forward, desiring to know more about Jesus, and some even gave their lives to Him. The children, in particular, were drawn to the message of love and hope. We left them with more than just food; we left them with the Word of God, knowing He would continue working in their hearts. The impact of our visit will remain in their minds for a long time, just as it will in ours.
As we traveled back, we reflected on the beauty and challenges of Northern Uganda. The dry lands, the hills, the free-roaming birds and animals, and the people with deep traditions were all a reminder of why we do what we do. JFM’s mission is to reach the unreached, feed the hungry, and bring hope to the hopeless. And in Northern Uganda, we had done just that. Every journey reminds us that the harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few. Yet, we press on, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
