Granny Kate has spent her entire life in Kakuumi Village, a place she has called home for seventy-five years. Age has bent her back and taken her teeth, but it has never touched her warmth or the gentle courage in her voice. When we visited her home, we found her seated quietly outside, enjoying the calm of the afternoon while her two precious granddaughters, Sarah and Nassuuna, moved around her small compound with love and responsibility. Despite the challenges of old age, she carried a peaceful dignity that drew us close even before we spoke.
Sarah was tending to a local kettle balanced over a small fire, carefully adjusting the sticks beneath it. The sweet smell of boiling black tea drifted through the air, and from the way she handled everything, it was clear she knew exactly how to care for her grandmother. She kept glancing toward the house, making sure Granny Kate was comfortable, while Nassuuna swept the compound with steady hands. These young girls, though still children, carried a tenderness beyond their years, shaped by the weight of responsibility and the deep love they had for their grandmother.
When we sat down to talk with Granny Kate, her face brightened with joy. She listened with full attention as we shared the message of Jesus, nodding slowly and smiling as though every word touched something deep inside her. Even without teeth, her smile was one of the most beautiful we had ever seen—pure, grateful, and full of hope. While her granddaughters continued their chores, she engaged fully, thankful for the comfort and truth the conversation brought to her heart.
Before we left, JFM blessed her with food, and her reaction was unforgettable. She lifted her hands slightly, whispering words of thanks, overcome by the kindness of strangers who stepped into her life with compassion. To her, the food was not just a meal—it was a reminder that God still sees her, still cares for her, and still sends help through willing hearts. As we walked away, her joy lingered behind us, a testimony of how simple acts of love can shine brightly in the life of someone who has endured much.
