Bakali is a true African man who embodies a deep love for his culture, living a life of simplicity and connection to his roots. Despite his outward appearance, he carries an unexpected depth, blending tradition and modern achievement. When JesusFedMe (JFM) first encountered him, Bakali was busy crafting a hoe handle, a skill passed down through generations. His hair, untrimmed in the traditional style, hinted at a man who rarely bathed and maintained his routines in line with cultural practices. He lived in a humble home surrounded by a green fence with no formal entrance, emphasizing his preference for simplicity and isolation.
Upon speaking with Bakali, JFM was stunned to learn that he had earned a PhD in education—a man who held an advanced degree despite his torn and dirty clothes. His humility and attachment to his cultural ways masked the extraordinary achievements he had accomplished in the modern world. Bakali welcomed JFM warmly into his compound, which consisted of three tiny houses made from local materials, homes for his children, though none were seen during the visit.
However, something unexpected happened when the time came to share the gospel. As we began to speak about Christ’s love, Bakali abruptly ran into one of the houses and locked the door behind him, avoiding the message of salvation. His reaction left us puzzled, reflecting many people’s internal struggle between tradition, modernity, and spiritual conviction. It reminded us that the gospel can touch lives even in the most hidden corners of the heart, but some may need time to open up to its transformative message.
This encounter with Bakali was a powerful reminder that behind every outward appearance lies a story, sometimes one of great learning and hidden potential. J FM continues to pray for Bakali, believing that one day he will open his heart to the truth of Jesus, just as he had once opened his doors to strangers.
