Christine Nakawuki: Finding Hope in Jesus
Sixteen-year-old Nakawuki Christine caught our attention as we were speaking to people about the love of Christ. While everyone around was listening, Christine stood alone, and something about her immediately touched our hearts. She looked desperate and seemed not to be doing well, so I felt the need to speak with her one on one.
As we began talking, we learned that Christine had stopped attending school while she was still in Primary Four, following the death of both of her parents. Hearing this was deeply touching. At such a young age, she has already experienced a level of loss that no child should have to carry alone. Yet there she stood, facing life with very little support.
Christine’s story reminded us that behind many faces we meet during our outreach are stories of pain, loss, and unanswered questions. Sometimes people may look fine from a distance, but when you take time to listen, you discover the struggles they are carrying inside. Christine needed someone to listen to her, encourage her, and remind her that she had not been forgotten.
We spoke to Christine about Jesus Christ, pointing her to the One who cares deeply for the brokenhearted. We reminded her that Jesus is the Father of the fatherless and that He sees those who feel abandoned and alone. Even when earthly parents are no longer present, God’s love and care remain.
Our conversation was not simply about giving Christine words of encouragement; it was about giving her a reason to hope. We wanted her to understand that her circumstances do not have to define her future. There is still hope in Christ, and her life still has value and purpose.
When we finally left Christine, she was better than we found her. We may not have been able to solve every challenge she faces in one conversation, but we were able to share something eternal—the love of Jesus. Sometimes a simple conversation, a listening ear, and a reminder of God’s love can bring light into someone's darkest moment.
Christine’s story is a reminder of why JesusFedMe (JFM) continues to go out to communities, feed the hungry, listen to hurting people, pray with them, and share the Gospel.
