Growing Old In Poverty, The Untold Pain Of Forgotten Grandmothers.

Growing Old In Poverty, The Untold Pain Of Forgotten Grandmothers.

There is a kind of suffering that comes with growing old in poverty, a pain that often goes unnoticed because the people carrying it have learned to suffer in silence. Across many communities in Uganda, elderly grandmothers wake up each morning with no assurance of where their next meal will come from, who will check on them, or whether anyone still remembers that they exist.

Their hair has turned grey, their bodies have grown weaker, and their hands, which once worked tirelessly to raise children and care for families, can no longer do what they used to. Yet, for some, the hardest part of growing old is not the weakness of their bodies but the loneliness of facing life without someone to lean on.

During our work with JesusFedMe (JFM), we encounter vulnerable people whose lives remind us that poverty is much more than having an empty pocket. It is the pain of sitting beside an empty cooking pot, wondering how you will survive another day. It is living in a humble house that offers little protection from heavy rain, struggling to find food, and having nobody to turn to when sickness comes. For some elderly women, the children they once raised are no longer around to support them. Others have lost loved ones, while some live in circumstances that leave them feeling forgotten by the very communities in which they have spent their lives.

Imagine spending decades caring for others, only to reach old age and find yourself struggling to receive the same care you once gave. These grandmothers have stories written into their wrinkled faces and calloused hands. Some worked tirelessly to raise their children; others sacrificed their comfort so that younger family members could have better opportunities.

Today, many need the simplest things: a plate of food, a little assistance, someone to sit with them, and a reminder that their lives still matter. Their needs may appear small to someone who has never experienced hunger, but to a grandmother who does not know where her next meal will come from, a bag of food can mean relief from a deeply troubling day.

This is one of the reasons JesusFedMe continues reaching out to vulnerable families across Uganda. Our work is not simply about delivering food and moving to the next home. We want to see the people we meet, listen to their concerns, understand their struggles, and remind them of God's love. When we visit a home, we do not see an elderly woman as just another person in need. We see a human being worthy of dignity, compassion, and respect. We see someone whose life has value, regardless of her age, financial circumstances, or the number of people who remember her.

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments during our outreach happen when we put aside everything else and listen. A grandmother may have lived for months without anyone asking how she is truly doing. She may have become accustomed to keeping her worries to herself because she does not want to burden others.

When someone finally sits with her, listens patiently, offers food, and prays with her, that encounter can become a precious reminder that she has not been abandoned by God. We may not be able to change every circumstance she faces, but we can show her that compassion is still alive and that her suffering has not made her invisible.

At JFM, we believe that feeding the hungry and sharing the Gospel belong together. Food helps address an immediate physical need, while the message of Jesus Christ offers hope, comfort, and the assurance of God's love.

Through prayer and encouragement, we remind the people we meet that their worth does not depend on their possessions or their ability to provide for themselves. Even when life becomes difficult, they are not beyond the reach of God's grace.

As Psalm 71:9 says in the King James Version, “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.” These words express a cry that many elderly people may understand deeply: the desire not to be abandoned when their strength begins to fade.

But compassion must go beyond words. Our elderly grandmothers need communities that remember them, families that care for them where possible, and people willing to respond to their needs. They need food, access to medical care, safe shelter, and companionship. They need to know that growing old does not mean losing their place in society. Every one of us has an opportunity to make a difference, whether through sharing a meal, visiting an isolated neighbour, helping an elderly person reach a health facility, or supporting ministries that serve vulnerable people with love and accountability.

The truth is that none of us knows what our own circumstances will be in old age. The grandmother sitting alone today was once a young woman with dreams, responsibilities, and hopes for the future. She deserves to be treated with the same kindness we would want for our own mothers and grandmothers. We must never allow poverty to rob people of their dignity or old age to make them invisible.

As JesusFedMe continues serving vulnerable people in Uganda, our prayer is that more forgotten grandmothers will experience the love of Christ through practical acts of kindness. We thank God for every opportunity to deliver food, pray with families, share the Gospel, and encourage those who are struggling. We know that we cannot meet every need, but we can remain faithful to the people God places before us, one household at a time.

A grandmother should not have to grow old feeling forgotten. Behind every tired face is a life that matters, a story worth hearing, and a soul loved by God. May we never become so busy with our own lives that we overlook those who need our compassion most. And may every meal shared, every prayer offered, and every hand extended in love point people to Jesus, the One who calls us to care for the vulnerable and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

At JesusFedMe, we give Jesus all the glory for every life touched. Our mission continues: feeding the hungry, praying with the hurting, sharing the Gospel, and bringing hope to those who need it most.
